Powell Ranch Sells in Western South Dakota

          The heart of the Vern and Florabelle Powell Ranch has been in their family for 90+ years.  They raised cattle and put up hay.  Florabelle was 88 when they took away her swather.  Vern was known for his stout buildings.  He used concrete for pillars to attach windbreak, as well as sidewalls in his barn and shop.  The steel buildings had extra rafters and insulated doors. It was said that his workers had to use a certain number of screws each time they attached a board. Vern left this world in 2010 and Florabelle in 2015.

This Pennington County ranch is located just south and west of New Underwood, SD, with the Black Hills in the distance.  Their children, Gary and Roberta, sold this ranch by absolute auction on January 26, 2022. The auction was conducted by Arneson Auction Service, and Piroutek Auction Service, and their crew.  The 2320 acres sold for an overall average of $ 1743 per acre.

          The New Underwood Community Center was filled with 150+ people, with 50 registered buyers from 6 states, including Colorado, Wisconsin, Wyoming, North Carolina, Hawaii, and both the east and west sides of South Dakota.

Offered in 10 tracts, and as an entire unit, the battle lasted 10 rounds until there was no longer a bidder for the entire unit.  At that point, each of the 10 tracts was offered for a final time.

Seven different bidders purchased the 10 tracts. Tract 4 and Tract 7 sold to one buyer. Tracts 5, 6, and 8 sold to one buyer.

Here is the summary:

 Tract 1 (80 acres with well and some buildings) @ $ 3250;

 Tract 2 (80 acres) @ $ 2700;

 Tract 3 (240 acres) @ $ 1700;

 Tract 4 (160 acres, the main headquarters with home & barns)

                                                                                  @ $ 3500;
