Here’s what we’ve been up to lately…

• Wed. Sept. 15, 2010: Vrooman Land Sale: This 12.54 acre tract just west of Fort Pierre, SD, brough $3,588 per acre. It was an undeveloped lot with good access. An adjacent 40-acre tract brought $3,235 per acre, including a small but newer two-bedroom home with attached garage, several barns and some corrals.

• Sun. Aug. 1, 2010: Beirwagen Real Estate Auction: One-story home in Philip, SD, sold for $26,000. It had hardwood floors, two bedrooms and one bath, plus a detached garage with electric door opener on a small lot.

• Wed. July 28, 2010: Land Auction: Two hundred and thirty acres of ready-to-develop land in Box Elder, SD, near the growing Ellsworth Air Force Base, sold to the South Dakota Ellsworth Development Authority. With frontage on Interstate 90, Highway 14-16 and the offramp at Liberty Road, this is a good spot for residential and/or commercial development. It sold at $2,500 per acre, plus the new owner will pay the City of Box Elder $1,089 per acre to hook up  water already on the property, bringing the effective price to $3,589 per acre.

• Sun. June 20: Home Auction: Gerald and Gladys Morgan Home in New Underwood, SD, sold for $82,500. This older mobile home had been extensively remodeled with new windows and electrical, plus central air.  Included an immaculate yard with in-ground sprinklers and an asphalt driveway and an extra-tall three-car garage/shop with insulated workroom.

• Sat. June 19: Home Auction: David Parker Estate in Rapid Valley, Rapid City, SD, sold for $46,250. An older home that needed lots of work (some thought it needed to be removed entirely) on a large but rather narrow lot. Property included a large garage/shop with one overhead door, plus room to store and work on other vehicles.

• Wed. May 12, 2010: (with Arneson Auction) Letellier Land Auction: More than 45 pickup-loads full of bidders showed up on a rainy Wednesday for the sale of this prime 159-acre plot of southeastern South Dakota farmland. It was bought by a nearby resident for $2,425 an acre.

• Thurs. Nov. 5, 2009: (w/Arneson Auction) Donn & Kathi Varland Absolute Land Auction: 472.13 acres of farmland, currently in alfala. In Meade County, 25 miles south of Faith, SD, right along Hwy 73. Good fences. Two stock dams. It sold in one unit for $ 535 per acre.

• Sun. Oct. 25, 2009: Jerrald & Jeraldyne Heinricks Retirement Farm Auction. Just off Hwy 44 east of Rapid City, near Scenic, SD.

Fri. Oct. 23, 2009: Patti Geigle Greenseth Farm Machinery & Ranch Equipment Auction. There was a big crowd, with a few items consigned by neighbors. The offering included tractors, trucks, machinery, tools, many panels and gates, plus livestock equipment, some antiques, and quite a selection of household items.

Sun. Oct. 18, 2009: (w/Arneson Auction) Dugan Stewart Ranch Equipment Retirement Auction. A nice crowd gathered on the only truly beautiful day in October. Sale was held east of Milesville on the Tom Ferguson Ranch which had sold at Absolute Auction on June 3. Also sold were tools, some antiques, toys, household items, and cowboy art and misc. including a western table lamp for $240, and small C. Russell Prints at $45 each.

Wed. Oct. 7, 2009: (w/Arneson Auction) Carolyn M. Sanders Absolute Home Auction. This 24 X 38 one-story home in need of major repair and remodel was located on a 102 X 75 lot on Lion Drive in Rapid City, SD. It drew lots of interest, as it was a good neighborhood, but the home needed work. The lot was large enough that a garage could be added. It sold for $70,000.

Wed. Sept. 23, 2009: (w/Arneson Auction) Faith Feeds, Inc. Absolute Business & Real Estate Auction. This attractive, very modern feed mill sits on two large lots right on Hwy 212 on the east edge of Faith, SD. Included with the real estate was the 48X96 main building plus the connected 32 X 24 office area. Selling with the property was a roller mill, the blender, scales, bins, chutes, etc. It sold for $161,000 and will open up as a full service feed store.

Sun. Sept. 20, 2009: Bill Johnson Farm Machinery. East of Howes, SD, on Hwy 34, this was older equipment that hadn’t been used for a few years. A Conveyair Grain Vac sold for $2,600. The JD 7720 Combine brought $5,250, and the 8 row (30”) Corn Head sold for $2,700.

Mon. Sept. 14, 2009: (w/Weishaar Auction) Deiter Bros. Farm Machinery & Livestock Equipment Auction. So far, this was the largest farm sale we’ve ever conducted. A huge crowd gathered near Faulkton, SD, on the beautiful Deiter Bros. Farmstead. The grass was green and recently mowed. There was plenty of room to display the acres of items for sale. Deiter Bros. had well-cared-for equipment, and this was reflected in the prices they received. The livestock equipment and fencing were the highlight of the sale as we literally sold miles of fencing. It was a pleasure to conduct the sale with Lynn and Wayne Weishaar, for whom I have the utmost of respect.

Sun. Sept. 13, 2009: (w/Arneson Auction) Lauren Luedeman Absolute Auction. The real estate included a 1972 Mobile Home on nine beautiful acres in the Black Hills, 10 miles south of Custer, SD. It had its own well and septic, and sold to a couple from eastern South Dakota for $129,000. Personal Property included tools, crafts, a bell collection, a cap collection, and many interesting items.

Wed. Sept. 9, 2009: (w/Arneson Auction) Clyde Smith Estate Absolute Real Estate Auction. Neighbors and bidders from surrounding states gathered to bid on 2,397.38 acres of rolling grassland with draws, breaks and trees. It stretched along two miles of French Creek and had views of the Black Hills. It was 30 miles south of Rapid City, just east of Hwy 79 and in Custer County. It was offered in seven tracts and sold to three different parties at an overall average of $749 per acre. The south 360 acres sold for $640 per acre. The middle 774.38 acres sold for $741 per acre. The 1,263 acres, mostly along French Creek, to the north sold for $785 per acre.

Sun. Aug. 30, 2009: MikBrady Homes, Inc. “Going Out of Business Auction.” Located in Black Hawk, just north of Rapid City, this was a manufactured and modular home sales business. All personal property sold including tools, parts, office supplies and all sorts of Furniture and Display Furnishings, including some appliances. It was a large crowd on a nice day. Two sale rings were held most of the day. Two homes were sold. A 1,664 sq. ft. manufactured home sold for $70,000. A 2,100 sq. ft. true modular home sold for $88,000.

Wed. Aug. 12, 2009: Kukal Farms Land (with Arneson Auction). 3,053 acres south of Kadoka, SD were offered in seven tracts and sold as an entire unit, for $451 per acre. Located on the Pine Ridge Reservation, there was both farmland and pastureland with live creeks. Headquarters had a manufactured home on a partial basement, plus 92,000 bu. of grain storage in bins and Quonset-type buildings. Good barn adn shop. Good wells plus Mni Wiconi water pipeline along property.

• Mon. Aug. 10, 2009: (w/Gordon Good, Auctioneer) Kukal Farm Machinery Auction. Another big sale with a good crowd of buyers on hand. This sale was held south and west of Kadoka, SD, right along Hwy 44, near Wanblee, SD. The major part of the sale was the farm equipment and shop tools, but we also sold meat cutting equipment, a few antiques, and some household items.

Sun. July 14, 2009: the late Dick Wiedemer Construction Auction. Dick had a successful business based out of his home in Ft. Pierre, SD, for many, many years. We sold specialty tools, plus many parts used in the electrical, plumbing, and concrete business. Specialty items including concrete forms and scaffolding, and hard to find parts were offered. The Ditch Witch V-4 Trencher w/Blade sold for $1,000, as did the Winpower 25/15 PT2 Generator. It was a hot day, with a smaller crowd. Many of the bidders had home shops and independent repair businesses where some of these older items could find a fit.

Sat. July 13, 2009: Earl Wilmarth Estate Auction. This was a busy day in Kadoka, SD, with lots of items. This was a fine offering of clean, high quality new furniture plus some antique furniture. Lots of jewelry drew lots of attention. The ten antique lamps were popular, with the high seller bringing $150. We sold a Frederic Remington folder w/artist’s proofs of six Remington paintings, c. 1904, for a total of $2,750. Each print sold separately with the highest print going for $700. The sale featured 100 pieces of Hisey Glass, with one of the candy dishes bringing $170. We also offered 60 pieces of Vaseline glass, selling a bowl for $225 and a cake plate for $100.

• Sun. June 21, 2009: Larry Johnson Retirement Machinery Auction, plus Tom Wicks Estate. This good collection of machinery sold on the north edge of Faith, SD, on a beautiful day, with a youth rodeo just across the road.

Thurs. June 18, 2009: M. Peterson Home (with Arneson Auction). On large corner lot in Philip, SD. Fully finished basement with attached garage, this brick home and lots sold for $47,500.

Wed. June 17, 2009: (w/Arneson Auction) Faith School Building Parts Auction. This building had been condemned and slated for demolition. We went in and sold any removable items that were desired out of each of the rooms. There were many sq. ft. of beautiful hard wood floors. We sold fixtures, plumbing parts, doors, trim boards, maps, chalk boards, benches, etc. The price was right for anyone willing to do some work to salvage parts of this history. It was mostly a local crowd, with some outside bidders on the hardwood floors.

Sun. June 14, 2009: George Bean Estate Machinery, Tools, Vehicles, Livestock Equipment and Household Auction. Located west of Belle Fouche in a scenic area, this was another large sale where we had two sale rings going most of the day. We sold 1,208 items that day.

Sat. June 13, 2009: Ivan and Miriam Schilling Moving Auction. The Schillings had sold their home in the town of Midland, SD, near the intersection of Hwys 63 and 14. They sold many items, including furniture, some antiques, toys, books, tools, and general housewares. One of the features of the sale was the coins which sold for a total of $3,102. There were 120 different lots of coins. Ivan collected many of the coins while running several businesses in Midland. Also sold was a 1929 Model A Ford Coupe for $4,500, and a 1931 International A-2 Truck for $700. The #4 Butter Churn Style Red Wing “with leaves” Crock sold for $230. There was no lid.

• Sun. June 7, 2009: Twila Merrill’s Retirement Antique Auction. Scenic, SD. In the 1950’s Twila competed in every rodeo event except bull dogging. She’s in the Casey Tibbs Hall of Fame, and featured in “Cowgirls.” Quitting rodeo in 1963, she settled in the Badlands, bought the bar in Scenic, SD, took over the rock and fossil collection from her dad, and began trading with the locals, and building her businesses. Now it was time to disperse part of her collections. It was good that this was one of the longest days of summer, as we started at 9 am and went until dark, with 2 rings going almost the entire day. We sold 1,695 items including all types of Western and Native Artwork and items, rocks, fossils, furniture, paintings, sculptures, books, antiques, and many, many tools and other items. This was only part of her collection. She hopes to have another sale this next year, giving others a chance to own some of these treasures.

Wed. June 3, 2009: Rafter Cross Ranch (Tom Ferguson Estate) with Arneson Auction. 55 miles west of Pierre, SD, this ranch sold to a packed house of bidders. The successful bider paid $396 per acre for the entire site. This 9,00-acre range includes rolling grassland with draws and breaks and a mile and a half along Plum Creek. There’s a nice ranch headquarters along the creek with two homes and several barns and equipment sheds. Bidders came from near, and as far away as North Carolina.

Sat. May 30, 2009: Elizabeth Larsen Estate Real Estate and Personal Property Auction (with Arneson Auction). The real estate was a one-story 936 sq. ft home on a corner lot in Philip, SD. It had hardwood floors and central air and included the kitchen appliances. There was a small detached garage and a cement basement. The property sold for $30,000. The 1976 Ford Grenada car with only 18,255 miles on it sold for $2,000. We also sold the Osburn family antiques and miscellaneous along with the Larsen household items.

• Thurs. April 2, 2009: Wall School Real Estate (with Arneson Auction). This property was in Wall, SD, just north of Interstate 90 at Exit 110. These six empty city lots with utilities nearby, or on parts of the property, sold as one unit for $80,000.

Wed. Nov 12, 2008: Gene Stoeser Estate Sale

This day found us wading around in six inches of mud at the Gene Stoeser Estate Sale west of Pierre, SD. The sun was shining, the crowd was smiling, and there was active bidding on this late model equipment, along with trucks and trailers. Sales included two JD 9610 Maximizer Combines, a pair of MacDon 962 Harvest Headers and dozens more items. For more details, click here.

Sat. Oct. 11, 2008: Gilbert Collins Estate and Edna Collins Sale.

This sale drew a large crowd to the Community Center in Faith, SD, on a cool, damp day for items from the Collins home and some from Arden Palmer. A rock collection sold mostly individually and garnered more than $1,000 in all. The large collection of costume and semi-precious jewelry drew lots of interest, too, as did many of the western and local history books. See full sale results here.


Wed. Oct. 1, 2008: Hanson Ranch Land sale. This land auction, near Union Center, SD (east of Sturgis and northeast of Rapid City) drew buyers from as far afield as Illinois and Arizona for active bidding. The land, 5710.5 acres along Hwy. 34, was carved into lots ranging from 591 acres to 1936 acres and sold to four different buyers. The average price paid was $362.22 per acre. Tract 1 sold for $375 per acre. Tract 2 sold for $300 per acre. Tract 3 and Tract 4 sold for $350 per acre. On the west side, Tract 5, the largest tract, with the creeks, sold for $400 per acre. Registered buyers came from registered from Nebraska, Illinois, Colorado, Arizona and South Dakota.

Wed. Sept. 3, 2008: Leroy Wicks Machinery Auction. Held on a beautiful afternoon just west of Faith, SD, this machinery sale sold a John Deere 4240 tractor, a Trailmobile hay tractor and a Freightliner semi-trailer and three other tractors. All told, the sales fetched more than $58,000. See full sale results here.

Mon. July 21, 2008 (with Arneson Auction) Richard Ekstrum River Ranch
This 1,070.63+ acre lot just south of I-90 at Belvidere, SD, was offered in two tracts. Rolling pasture w/180 acres of good hay meadows, electricity, well, three stock dams, two rural water taps, fenced, small, older house, 2 1/2 miles of river frontage along the White River. Sold at Absolute Auction. The tract along the river had a bid of $ 750 per acre. The property ended up selling as an entire unit for $ 625.00/acre.

July 20, 2008: Ken Dietrich Estate Auction.

Included depression & fiesta glassware, furniture and antiques, plus fishing rods, reels, lures, guns, & tools. A huge crowd gathered. The pictured green hand mixer sold for $165 & the green Ice Bucket for $40. The brand books brought from $50 up to $285, averaging $130. The fish mounts sold from $27.50 to $90. June 22, 2008: Jassmann Home (w/Arneson

Auction). A home on 3.87 beautiful acres in the Black Hills, just south of Rapid City, SD. We had tremendous interest in this property, especially with the fantastic “end of the lane, top of the hill” view, only five miles from Rapid City. The property assessed at $217,000, and sold at Absolute Auction for $307,000.

June 8, 2008: Ben Joens Retirement Farm Equipment Auction. We sold two dozen items, mostly farm equipment and guns, at a retirement auction for a farmer near Eagle Butte, SD. Items included three tractors, pickups, trailers, campers, balers and a variety of firearms. All told, the auction collected nearly $94,000. Click here for more details.

Sun. June 1, 2008: C&J Stoeser Farm and Ranch Equipment Sale. At this farm and ranch auction near Ft. Pierre, SD, we sold 13 items, including three John Deere tractors, mowers, a baler and 165 straw bales, fetching nearly $130,000 in all. Click here for full details.

Wed. May 14, 2008 (with Arneson Auction). Deuane M. Smith Pasture Land, just outside Rapid City, SD. We had 1,279+ acres selling in three tracts at Absolute Auction, with electricity, a well, stock dams and fencing. The property ended up selling as an entire unit for $615.00 an acre.

Tues. May 13, 2008: Dean and Lola Oja Ranch Equipment Auction. Sales topped $240,000 at this ranch equipment auction near Buffalo, SD. We sold three John Deere tractors, pickups, a trailer, a swather and a baler, among other things. Click here for full details.
